Reiki and its Proven Effectiveness
As more and more spiritual practices become mainstream, you may have already heard of Reiki. You also might have some questions about it! Here is more information to help you understand the intricacies of this ancient practice.
What is Reiki?
The lineage of Reiki can be traced to ancient Japanese culture. The Japanese word Reiki means spiritually guided life force energy. Qualified practitioners use the energy fields inside and outside of the body to stimulate healing responses. Reiki falls under the category of biofield therapy, but unlike other therapies that can easily drain the practitioner, Reiki practitioners just allow the Reiki energy to flow through their hands and into their client to aid in healing.
Is there any science to prove it?
Multiple studies have been conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of Reiki and the results are conclusive that Reiki does have a positive effect on healing and overall wellbeing.
One study focused on a Reiki arm treatment and the results are as follows: “Of the 13 suitable studies, 8 demonstrated Reiki being more effective than placebo, 4 found no difference but had questionable statistical resolving power, and only one provided clear evidence for not providing benefit. Viewed collectively, these studies provide reasonably strong support for Reiki being more effective than placebo.” You can read the full report HERE.
Another report detailing the same study states: “The results from this large-scale multisite effectiveness trial suggest that a single session of Reiki improves multiple variables related to physical and psychological health.” You can read the full report HERE.
What conditions can Reiki help?
The possibilities of what Reiki can help are seemingly endless. Because it’s an energetic practice and everything is made of energy, plants, animals, places, and even objects can be infused with Reiki energy.
In terms of physical ailments of the human body, Reiki can ease both physical and mental symptoms. Pain, fatigue, anxiety, depression, and overall well-being can be improved with Reiki.
Most recently, Reiki has been used in the UK to help healthcare professionals who have been impacted by the global COVID-19 pandemic heal from the traumas they have had to endure.
Another study was conducted that looked at Reiki specifically for knee surgery pain. They conducted a blind-controlled pilot study on 46 patients undergoing knee replacement surgery and the group who received Reiki showed significant reductions in pain, blood pressure, respiration rate, and state anxiety. What should I expect at my session?
When you have your session you should just expect to be energetically supported, feel comfortable, and be open for deep relaxation. One of the beauties of Reiki is that it can be practiced both in-person or virtually, and it can be hands-on or hands-off. If you are in person, your practitioner will ask your permission to put their hands on you, so if you feel uncomfortable with that, simply decline. The Reiki healing will still work. You’ll likely be laying on some type of massage table or comfortable mat, and if you’re at home you can lay on cushions or on your bed. The practitioner might ask you some questions about why you’re wanting to receive the Reiki as well.
Overall you can expect a very calm and comfortable experience. You won’t be “doing” anything other than focusing on your breath, calming your mind, enjoying the relaxing experience. After your session, your practitioner may go over some areas where they felt resistance or felt they needed to spend more time on, and you can do anything you want with that information.
What should I look for in a Reiki practitioner?
You should always trust your intuition first and foremost when choosing someone to do energetic healing work with you. When you find someone you feel good about, check to make sure they are Reiki attuned and have the proper training. There are three levels of Reiki training, and typically only those with levels II and III are ready to perform Reiki on others.
